WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Definitions

Cookies are text strings created by a web application and stored on the client used by the user to access the Internet (PC, smartphone, tablet, etc.) and then retransmitted to the user’s subsequent Internet accesses. Cookies make it possible to collect information on the User’s browsing activity on the Websites, for example in order to remember language preferences or the currency used for a purchase. Cookies may be stored permanently on the device and have a variable duration (so-called “persistent cookies”), or they may be deleted upon closure of the browser or have a limited duration (so-called “session cookies”). Cookies may be installed by the website that the User is visiting (so-called “first-party cookies”) or may be installed by other websites (so-called “third-party cookies”).
Similar technologies, such as web beacons, clear GIFs, and all forms of local storage introduced with HTML5, can be used to collect information about user behavior and use of the services.

Types

Based on their characteristics and usage, cookies can be classified into different categories:

  • Strictly Necessary Cookies: These are cookies essential for the proper functioning of the Website and are used to manage the session, login, and access to restricted areas of the site. The duration of these cookies is strictly limited to the session (they are deleted when the browser is closed).
  • Analytics and Performance Cookies: These cookies are used to collect and analyze traffic and website usage. They allow, for example, the detection of whether the same User returns at different times. They also enable monitoring of the system to improve its performance and usability. Disabling these cookies can be done without any loss of functionality.
  • Profiling Cookies: These cookies are used to create a profile of the User in order to send advertising messages that are in line with the preferences expressed by the User during previous browsing.

Third-party cookies

When visiting a website, cookies may be received either from the site being visited (“first-party cookies”) or from websites operated by other organizations (“third-party cookies”). A notable example is the presence of “social plugins” or the integration of third-party maps. These are parts of the visited page generated directly by such third-party sites and integrated into the hosting site’s page. The most common use of social plugins is to enable content sharing on social networks, while maps allow the activity to be located according to the established geographical coordinates.

The presence of these services involves the transmission of cookies to and from all sites managed by third parties. The management of information collected by third parties is governed by their respective privacy notices, to which Users are encouraged to refer.
